Ricepaddy’s Recipe for a successful mindset

Now I’ve already talked about taking care of your mind but what mindset should you be in? Doubtless you’ve heard hundreds if not thousands of opinions about what that mindset should be and my own opinion is going to be just a drop in the bucket. If you’re reading this I would venture to guess that your bucket has enough room for at least one more drop so here it is.

Mindsets are kind of like shoes: we all need them, but they don’t always fit.

When you watch Olympic sprinters lining up for the race, do you notice any of them wearing dress shoes? Old beat up shoes that you might find in a dumpster? Flip flops? Let’s not be silly! Chasing after your goals with the wrong mindset is more or less the same thing. Any goal that you have in life that is worth having is going to have its share of hardships along the way. you will need to have the right mindset in place in order to weather the storm that is inevitably headed your way.

While I’ve had to work for decades on my own mindset, I don’t believe that you will have to. You can go on YouTube and type in “mindset” and see the virtual phone book that pops up on your screen. I know, I’ve looked. I’m sure it must seem after a while that they’re all saying the same thing. The five top qualities that I have observed in all of the successful people that I have ever met may seem like the same things as well. These are qualities that I endeavor to emulate in my own mindset. I do this because success is something that I greatly desire and so I emulate those to have success, not because the “phone book” is backing it up (but they are not wrong). Applying these qualities in my career as a cook has allowed me to shine and provide value to my employer and their business. It has allowed me to continually hone my craft (I will never claim to master it) over 32+ years and overdeliver to our customers.

Let’s cook up a successful mindset for you!

Here are your ingredients

  1. Desire – I mean Burning desire! Whatever it is that you want in life, you have to want it like it’s you next breath of air. You have to want it enough to be willing to make sacrifices and take massive amounts of action toward it! If you are not willing, then you don’t want it enough.
  2. Work Ethic – I mean showing up daily, showing up on time and showing up ready to take your game to the next level. You have to be committed to constantly overdelivering results and letting no one outwork you.
  3. Courage – I don’t mean a lack of fear, only stupid people are without fear. Courage means pushing forward in spite of your fear. You need courage to take risks and do things that you’ve never done before with no guarantee for the results. If you only do what you’ve always done, you will only achieve what you’ve already had.
  4. Sticktivity – I’m not sure even sure if that’s a real word but I’ve heard it so many times now that consider it to be. It means that you don’t quit! It is the relentless pursuit of your success. And that pursuit must continue against the possibility of failure, in the face of failure and even in the aftermath of failure. You can fail any number of times and still retain the possibility of success if you keep on trying. Quiting is the only way to ensure that your success never happens.
  5. Habits – I don’t mean smoking or fidgeting (although I’m guilty of both). I mean the practice of beneficial activities to the point when they come as naturally as tying your shoes. Good attitude is a habit. Practicing gratitude is a habit. Everything that I’ve mentioned in this post and the last are all things that I see successful people form into one long chain of good habits. Theses people achieve excellence and success in their lives because they’ve trained themselves to do so!

Success seems to come easily to successful people because they have done what it takes to make it come easily. But it’s really not easy! Nothing worthwhile gets accomplished without hard work. When I was a kid, I would throw tantrums because tying my shoes was so hard for me. It was hard work to remember the right way to tangle two bits of string together out of all the different ways two bits of string could be tangled together! It was hard …until I learned it. Most of us can tie our shoes upside-down in pitch black while being fall down drunk without even thinking! What if the habits of success came that easily to you? To us? What could we accomplish? What if you had a goal that you wanted so bad that you would give up just about anything for? One that you would chase relentlessly every day win, lose or draw and work harder for it than anything you’ve worked at before. Would anything truly be able to stop you? Scary? Or exciting? I hope that you’re excited! I know I am!
